Hi there,

I am Helena and I listen to the plants… and speak for the trees, the flowers, and life on earth as much as I can. My background is in multi-media storytelling, as in journalism and documentary research and script writing, and I used these mediums to tell environmental stories. I have always had a keen interest and passion for natural medicine and healing remedies. I believe that we are part of nature and nature is part of us. There is no separation. We come from mother earth and to her we shall return.

So… we belong as nature.

If we take care of her, she kindly takes care of us.
We just have to tune in and listen.
When we listen and feel, we can meet the plants and they can tell us what they can do for us.

Herbal medicine is not alternative medicine, it is the original medicine.

There is so much to learn about the magic of plants and how they work on all levels, physical, emotional and spiritual. They are true teachers, one just has to be open to learning. There are so many amazing healing plants and so much to learn about how and when to use them.

My interest in plants as healers began growing up on an isolated farm in the Karoo, very far from any doctor’s office or hospital. If one was ill or injured, one had to use what one had at hand.

When, as a child, I had a bad dose of flu, my dear African mother, Jane, treated me with a steam inhalation using Artemisia and Eucalyptus leaves. She also insisted I drink a brew of bitter Artemisia tea. She added honey, but it was unforgettable. It completely shifted the bunged-up feeling. I could breathe again.

In the past years I have been privileged to study with the late great Zanemvula, Peter von Maltitz, a qualified African Traditional Healer and Homeopath. Under his tutorship, I learned that herbal medicine requires humility and self-awareness: the ability to tune into one’s native instincts and intuition and really listen.

This is also true of scientific research and study. As a researcher, I like to back up my learning with academic scientific findings, as a balanced approach to truth.

Wild Healing, Artimisia & Aphrodite: Helena's painting of two eland, a mountain and a teacup on a gold-leaf heart

The painting is Helena’s own: two eland, a mountain, Artemisia fronds, a bird, and a cup of tea resting on a gold-leaf heart.
